ALE is an informal international collaboration between teachers and educational developers in engineering educational institutions dedicated to improving engineering education by teaching that involves students in an active learning process and thereby gives them deeper understanding and engineering competencies. Within the context of globalisation, new forms of co-operation are called for. Since institutions around the world are involved in an ongoing reflection with respect to objectives, course delivery, tutoring, assessment, etc. and have developed their own active learning programmes, it is appropriate to bring together institutions with the same concerns. ALE forms a community of teachers, curriculum developers, researchers in teaching and learning, and study programme administrators interested in active learning techniques. The goal of the ALE network is to create strong partnerships between like-minded universities from different countries. Institutions should work together to establish shared objectives and to define the content of programmes. The main activity of the ALE network is the annual organization of an ALE workshop in different parts of the world.
